Cleveland Guardians Spring Training Prospect Report 3/1/25
Brito and Valdes hit wind aided homers
SCOREBOARD
Chicago Cubs 7, Cleveland Guardians 4
STARTER
Johnathan Rodriguez (LF): 0-2, K - Back to back starts in left for Rodriguez and not much to show offensively. He made the routine plays defensively and deterred some Cubs runners with his arm. It’s still early, but his bats haven’t been all that impressive as of yet.
Joey Cantillo (SP): IP, 3H, 4ER, 4BB, 2K - It was not a good day for Cantillo. His fastball control was not there. He was 90-91 and hit 93 on occasion. He actually had better secondary control. He had to be pulled to let Zane Morehouse finish the first inning before Cantillo could go out and get more work in the second inning, which he also didn’t complete. Triston McKenzie had a strong first outing of the spring, the way Cantillo did, but both of their second outings were just fraught with control issues.
RESERVES
Dayan Frias (3B): 0-1 - Nothing doing at the plate but made another slick play at third with a strong throw, which is now two days in a row for him and not a shock.
Yordys Valdes (SS): 1-1, HR, RBI - Valdes went Oppo taco in Mesa off of former Royal Brad Keller. That’s notable but I will point out that the wind in Mesa was ALL over the place and that homer was likely and Arizona jet stream dinger.
CJ Kayfus (1B): 0-1, K
Juan Brito (2B): 1-2, HR, K - Brito’s first at bat wasn’t pretty, taking a bit of an ugly swinging strike three. He got into a Brad Keller fastball pretty good though later and that ball would have been gone anywhere the way he hit it.
Jorge Burgos (RF): 1-2
Cooper Ingle (C): 1-2 - Ingle socked a ball through the middle with ease for a hit with his good bat control.
Jacob Cozart (DH): 0-1
Jaison Chourio (LF): 0-1, BB - Worked a walk vs. Brad Keller.
Kahlil Watson (CF): 1-2, 3B - A Arizona sun triple that caused the Cubs OF to struggle to catch what should have been a semi-routine gapper but Watson did plug it and run.
RELIEVERS
RHP Zane Morehouse: IP, H - Morehouse cleaned up Cantillo’s mess both times. He got the final out of the first inning and then finished up the second, though he let one of Cantillo’s inherited runs to score. Morehouse was 93-95 with the heat and a mid-80s slider. You can really see the extension in his delivery too.
RHP Zak Kent: IP, H, ER, BB, K - Not a totally impressive outing for Kent, who is looking to make an impression on this group as a depth option.
LHP Parker Mushinski: IP, 2K - I don’t think Mushinski threw a ball above 88 but he was effective.
RHP Jack Leftwich: IP, 2H, ER, K - Leftwich was 93-95 but got hit around a little and struggled with control. Again, this is just March 1, but I haven’t seen the big, exciting stuff and control from Leftwich since his injury at the end of 2023 in Lake County.
