Genao starting to heat up on rehab; Dominican Summer League opens
SCOREBOARD
ACL Guardians 9, ACL White Sox 4 - no Statcast
DSL Padres Gold 9, DSL Guardians Mendoza 8
DSL Guardians Goryl 20, DSL Orioles Orange 2
REHAB
Angel Genao (starting SS, ACL): 1-2, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 BB - While the focus is obviously on Genao extending his home run streak to three games, playing eight innings in the field and walking thrice are signs of progress towards readiness for non-complex ball that should not be overlooked.
Jaison Chourio (starting CF, ACL): 0-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 SB - Chourio, like Genao, also walked multiple times and played eight frames in the field.
HIGHLIGHTS
Reiner Herrera (C, ACL): 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B,2 RBI - After a rough start (.053/.280/.053 slash through May 15), Herrera has embarked on a ten-game productive plate appearance streak during which he is slashing .278/.357/.500 with 13 RBI in 42 plate appearances.
Hiverson Lopez (C, DSL Mendoza): 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K - Lopez, the star of this past January’s international free agent class, showed why the Guardians gave him a $900,000 signing bonus in a stellar professional debut that included a line drive RBI single to center that kicked off the scoring in Mendoza’s four-run fourth.
Jose Riera (SS, DSL Mendoza): 2-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB - Riera, another of this year’s top Caribbean signings ($400,000 bonus). Opened his pro career with a two-hit, two-RBI effort that included the Mendoza squad’s first stolen base of the new season.
Luis Galan (2B, DSL Mendoza): 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB - Galan rounded out the trio of big debuts from big money signees ($320,000) by reaching safely in four of his first five professional plate appearances.
Estivel Morillo (CF, DSL Mendoza): 2-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 K,2 Outfield Assists - Newcomers didn’t have all of the fun in Mendoza's Opening day contest as Morillo opened his sophomore pro campaign by pairing a pair of hits with a pair of outfield assists, including one on a play at the plate.
Wuinder Torres (1B, DSL Goryl): 3-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 1 E - When you see a 20-2 score, you know there’s some big offensive performances behind that former number and Torres had the biggest - opening his second season in the DSL with a career-high quartet of RBI and equaling the high water mark from his rookie campaign with a trio of hits - a total he reached against another organization for the first time yesterday. (His 2024 three-hit game was for Mendoza against Goryl last July 19.)
Gustavo Baptista (starting C, DSL Goryl): 2-4, 3 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB - Baptista, who signed for $40,000 this past offseason, was having arguably the best offensive performance of the day before being pinch hit for by fellow backstop Santiago Ustariz in the seventh.
Angel Abreu (DH, DSL Goryl): 3-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB - Big debuts weren’t just for the big money guys yesterday as Abreu, who was one of many $10,000 singing back in mid-January, shone brilliantly from the leadoff position in the Goryl batting order. If he keeps hitting anywhere near this well, there may be a lot more money coming his way in the future.
Israel Alvarez (2B. DSL Goryl): 2-5, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 HBP, 1 E - Another big night from a small-money signing ($50,000). This is why you pay attention to the entire international class, not just the flashy names.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Robert Arias (LF, ACL): 1-3, 1 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB - Arias opened the A-Guards’ scoring with a bases-loaded walk in the first and put a bow on the offensive explosion with a two-run single in the sixth.
Juneiker Caceres (RF, ACL): 0-3,1 R, 2 BB,1 E - Caceres’ pair of walks made it 17 games with a trip to the basepaths out of 18 played so far in his domestic debut season.
Luis Garcia (3B, DSL Mendoza): 1-4, 2 BB, 2 K, Picked Off 1 time - Despite the baserunning misadventure, Garcia had a solid day overall - reaching thrice in his pro debut after signing for $775,000 in January.
Marcos Belen (LF, DSL Mendoza): 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB - The Cuban rookie opened his DSL hit account with a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth.
Carlos Garces (RF, DSL Mendoza): 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K - The second-year pro rounded out the quintet of two-hit evenings from the bottom of the Mendoza lineup.
Freilyn Rodriguez (CF, DSL Goryl): 2-5, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB - the $180,000 offseason signing opened his pro career with a performance that would’ve been a highlight on most days.
Randy Martinez (LF, DSL Goryl): 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 3 K - The same can be said for the two-hit, two-run effort that started Martinez's second pro season.
Heins Brito (SS, DSL Goryl): 0-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB - The Guardians’ second biggest signing of the January 15 class ($825,000) opened his pro career with a multi-RBI effort despite going hitless thanks to a pair of productive outs (third inning fielder’s choice and a double play a frame later).
Rodny Rosario (3B, DSL Goryl): 0-4, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K - Rosario, who signed for $230,000, opened his professional run account with a huge deposit in a hitless effort.
Romer Tavares (RF, DSL Goryl): 1-3, 2 R, 3 BB - Speaking of walks, Taveras led the way in that department with a quarter of Goryl’s dozen of Dia Inaugural free passes.
Alexander Garcia (SP, DSL Goryl): ND, 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R (both earned), 1 BB, 1 HBP, 8 K - Garcia opened his second DSL season with a career-high eight punchados.
