Cleveland Guardians 2023 prospect scouting report: #18 OF Petey Halpin
Guardians prospect twitter is waiting for that breakout year in 2023
Build & Background
Classic centerfielder’s frame. Moderately compact with a strong build. Well defined arms. Now stronger in the lower half. Drafted out of Mira Costa High School and played for former Cleveland minor leaguer Keith Ramsey.Â
What Halpin does well
Potentially an average hit tool, possibly better. Good bat speed, quick hands and good at dropping the bat head to meet the plane of the ball. Good command of the strike zone. Plus speed on the bases and in the outfield. Above average arm that will play in center and right.

Where Halpin needs to improve
Added strength is needed for Halpin to impact the ball and deliver on his ability to make contact. Will likely end up with below average power overall. Could improve routes in the outfield.Â

Intangibles
Has shown the willingness to put in the work before games, take to coaching and work on his own in the offseason. Passionate player.
Future
Halpin has the kind of tool set that could blossom into a solid leadoff hitter. He has the speed, defense, patience and potential to make enough contact. It’s not a dissimilar skill set to Myles Straw. He still needs to add strength to make enough of an impact with the ball and utilize his speed. The hope is that Halpin’s hit tool can be a little more consistent than that of Straw, but adds the same level of plate discipline, speed and defense. His defense and speed alone could give him a role of a fourth outfield type or a late game pinch runner or dfensive replacement. His future will come down to contact skills and contact quality.Â
Role: 45 - Potential leadoff type hitter or floor of potential fourth outfielder
