First Impression:
Physically impressive and mature looking body. A bit wiry strong but nearly physically mature. Great looking raw power. Looks like an athletic, corner OF type.
What Makes Rosario Fun?
Who doesn’t love a 20 year old, athletic corner OF with 20/20 upside? There’s easy above average raw power in Rosario’s quick whippy swing. He’s able to pair that raw power so far by getting the ball in the air, and a swing and approach geared to catch the ball out front to pull. Very slight leg kick to transfer power to frontside. Strong hands and wrists. Has been able to draw walks despite so far, showing ability to stay in the zone. Better defense in a corner but has taken reps in center. Plus throwing arm that will play in the corner outfield spots.
What Could Hold Rosario Back?
The key for any young hitter that isn’t a generational talent (i.e Juan Soto types) are approach and swing and miss issues. Rosario isn’t a hacker and actually shows a good idea of the zone so far, but he has a very grooved swing. His bat path creates a steep vertical barrel angle and it goes through a good area of the zone where he can do damage with it, but it lacks adjustability. His bat path creates holes in his swing at the top of the zone especially. Though he stole 20 bases in 2024, Rosario doesn’t come out with blazing speed, just enough for some steals in today’s game and lacks overall agility and movement in the outfield, so his range might be limited though he should wind up in a corner.
Key Metric
59% - That is a tough contact rate to sustain moving up to tougher levels of pitching. It could get better, but he’s not a big chaser now, so either he will chase more, but he may not and what won’t improve his contact rates. HIs 48% pull rate is a good sign for his power in that direction, but the contact rate will be key for him to improve and succeed as he moves up.
Intangibles
Reports from Cubs prospectors were high on Rosario’s character, which seems to match the reports on him as an amateur and we know Cleveland does a good job and understands the importance when it comes to vetting player character in acquisitions.
Future
Rosario should be a candidate to get plenty of CF and RF reps in High-A Lake County, where his power is going to play well. If he’s going to make it to the majors, it might take some time for Rosario to adjust and make those adjustments, especially to his swing, in game. This is a bit more of a long term project for his talent level.
Role/Risk
35+/Extreme - Corner outfielder with 20/20 potential, or can’t get out of Double-A due to swing and miss issues.
