First Impression
Compact, undersized outfielder. Speed and high baseball IQ. Closed stance and hands behind his head in stance. Slight leg kick in swing. Athletic, small school player (Western Illinois to Indiana).
What Makes Mitchell Fun
Easy contact skills and speed give some promise on the offensive size. Speed plays in the outfield and could cover all three spots. Good at finding the barrel, even for a player with pretty mediocre size and pop. Good low ball hitter and idea of the zone.
What Could Hold Mitchell Back
Mitchell isn’t an overly physical outfielder and would probably need to stick in center to really provide value the way he can. In a corner, it’s lighter offense through he makes plenty of contact, it’s aggressive. That approach combined with fringe power, it makes it hard to find every day at bats in the majors without some additions or changes.
Key Metric
83.5% - Even in a shorter sample, Mitchell still ran a high contact rate and managed a .289 BABIP to hold up a solid, small sample.
Intangibles
Mitchell appeared to be well liked in the Toronto organization and by their prospect followers. Cleveland has been known to later trade for guys they targeted in past drafts and they do a good job getting to know people before acquisition. He also played in the Cape in college.
Future
Mitchell should slot in nicely in High-A to start the year at age 21. He tracks as a speed, defense and backup corner outfielder.
Role/Risk
40/Moderate - Corner outfield with CF backup, speed and contact.
