Build & Background
Greene is tall and slender with a physical, projectable frame. Broad shoulders. Long levers.Good, natural athlete. Greene was a Missouri commit but the Mets drated him in the 2020 draft with their Comp B pick and then later traded him to Cleveland in the Francsico Lindor trade.
What Greene does well
Right now what stands out the most for Greene are his strike zone awareness, athleticism and speed. He still has a proejctable frame he has yet to pull out, but he’s 21 going on 22 this year. Greene is a good athlete and rarely chases out of the strike zone, able to draw walks against pitchers who don’t have good control. He runs the bases well, and has the speed to have good range in the outfield.
Where Greene needs to improve
While Greene was able to draw walks in Low-A in 2022, his approach often looks more passive than patient, striking out looking more often than a hitter who makes good contact would normally. His swing can still be a bit long and downhill, using most of his body in his swing and doesn’t make a significant amount of hard contact yet while he’s still trying to develop more strength. For his speed, his defense in the outfield is better suited in a corner right now, looking to improve his footwork and route running.
Intangibles
Greene played in the area code games and against good competition in high school and worked out with former NFL running back Toby Gehart in high school, so he’s proved he puts in the work. Greene comes from an athletic family, with a brother in basebal and a brother who is a football coach.
Future
With the speed and lack of power, Greene needs to be able to make contact, draw walks and stick in centefield to make an impact in a regular role. He’ll need to add a little strength and produce harder contact. His speed and strike zone awareness are his base to work with. Despite his speed, his defensive skill set will need to improve to stick in center and his bat is most likely only going to play as a strong defensive centerfielder. Without added strength and stronger defense in center, he’s limited as a fifth outfielder in the corners and a pinch runner type. The upside is a speedy, defensive centerfield that can get on base. The floor is an org depth outfielder with a high amound of risk of not hitting his ceiling.
Role: 35 - Org depth/call-up
From no. 53 to no. 57. Is there some pattern you are using to explain the order of the profiles?
Greene is a long way off from Cleveland.
